The
area around Plas Bwlch is ideally suited for visitors wishing
to explore the beautiful countryside which mid-wales has to offer.
The farmhouse sits in the Upper Wye Valley with scenic views
in all directions, especially up the Valley itself. Llangurig
is the first village on the River Wye and its Parish Church,
St.Curig, dates back the before 550AD and has some fine woodwork
and stained glass windows. Both the Wye Valley Walk and the National
Cycle Route (Lon Las Cymru) pass through the village.
WALKING:
For walkers
there are numerous marked trails, the most renowned being the
Wye Valley Walk, along which the source of the River Wye and
the Severn eminate in the Plynlimon Hills. Other walks include
the Nant-Y-Arian trails at Ponterwyd, Hafren Forest in Llanidloes
along with the Elan Valley, which has a visitors centre. There
are also scenic walks at the nearby Llyn Clywedog, Nant – y – Moch
and Elan Valley Reservoirs along with the Gilfach Nature Reserve
near Rhayader.
CYCLING:
Both on
and off-road cycling is very well catered for in the area,
particularly because Llangurig is on the National Cycle Route.
Cycles are available for hire from Clive Powell Mountain Bike
Centre in nearby Rhayader, which also offers a Leisure Centre
and a wide choice of eating places. We are also listed at Cycling Holidays.
MOTORCROSS:
For the
rally and motorcross enthusiasts, Plas Bwlch is only 3 miles
from the Sweet Lamb Rally Complex, where numerous events take
place throughout the year.
BIRD
WATCHING:
The area
is outstanding for bird watching, the most famous being the
magnificent Red Kites which can be regularly be seen flying
over Plas Bwlch. Bird watchers often come to Mid-Wales to watch
the rare Osprey which has been recently introduced to the area.
Other breeds regularly seen at Plas Bwlch are Buzzards, Herons,
Harriers, Curlews, Flycatchers and Woodpeckers. For those wishing
to see the Red Kites up close, there are two feeding stations.
These are based at Gigrin Farm, Rhayader and Nant Y Arian,
Ponterwyd. At feeding time there can be as many as 50 birds
feeding at any one time.
OTHER
SPORT ACTIVITIES:
For those
enjoying other sports there is golf at nearby St.Idloes Golf
Club, Llanidloes. Boat and Fishing permits are available in
Llanidloes for guests who wish to undertake a spot of fly fishing
at the Llyn Clywedog Reservoir. Clay Pigeon shooting can be
enjoyed at Trefeglwys, Llanidloes where the World Championships
are held annually.
PLACES
TO VISIT DURING YOUR STAY:
For visitors
touring the area by car there are various attractions to be
explored. The Minerva Arts Centre in Llanidloes has numerous
exhibitions throughout the year, including the stunning summer
display of quilts. Other places to visit whilst on holiday
are Devils’ Bridge, Powis Castle and Gardens, The Centre
For Alternative Technology, Silver Lead Mine at Llywernog or
the Welsh Crystal Factory in Rhayader, to name but a few.
Plas Bwlch is about a 30 minute drive to Aberystwyth and the West Coast
(A44) and is equi-distant to our two National Parks, namely Snowdonia
and Brecon, both of which offer more stunning scenery.
